Why are Nutrition & Supplement Facts labels changing?

In May 2016, The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its decision to update nutrition and supplement facts labels to “reflect new scientific information… [and] enable consumers to make better informed food [and health] choices.” Nature Made supports this decision and incorporates the latest nutrition research in the development of all its products to provide individuals with various supplement options to help support a healthy lifestyle.

What is changing about the Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels?

The nutrition and supplement fact label may change in two ways – either with a daily value change and/or unit of measure change:

• UNIT CHANGE - Some nutrients are being expressed differently using updated units and information from the US National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as Institute of Medicine (IOM).
• DAILY VALUE CHANGES - Recent information on nutrient intakes and American diet as well new research has highlighted the need for increasing and/or decreasing the Daily Value (DV) of certain nutrients to help people meet their daily nutrient needs.

Why are there different Nutrition or Supplement Facts labels on the same NM product?

Nature Made is currently in the process of updating all relevant product labels to reflect the new FDA guidance on Nutrition and Supplement Facts. During this period of transition, you may see the current and or updated labels on retail shelves for the same Nature Made product. The process to update all Nature Made product labels will occur within the FDA guidance and timeline ; and, we appreciate your patience as this update process is completed.

Is it safe and/or effective to continue to use my usual NM product?

Yes, Nature Made is always committed to high quality products that allow individuals to address their nutrient needs and supplement their diets safely and effectively. Our products provide nutrients in sufficient amounts to help people fill nutrient gaps. Please follow recommended use as stated on the label.

What is changing with vitamin D on the new Supplement Facts label?

There is both a unit of measure change and a daily value change.

Daily Value Change: The Daily Value (DV) for vitamin D has increased from 10 mcg (400 IU) to 20 mcg (800 IU). It was updated to reflect newer scientific evidence from both the National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine; IOM) and report from the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Unit of Measure Change: Vitamin D is now based on micrograms (mcg) unit of measurement rather than the current measurement of International Units (IU). The conversion factor is 1 IU = 0.025 mcg vitamin D.

What is changing with B vitamins on supplement facts label? Why have the Daily Values (%DV) changed for the B vitamins?

Daily Value Change: The DVs have changed for biotin, folate, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and vitamin B12 (cobalamin) because the FDA is incorporating current scientific understanding of nutrients and aligning the DV with current National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine; IOM) recommendations.
