Q: What vitamins are best for menopause symptoms? |
A: Supplements taken for hot flashes/night sweats include soy isoflavones, black cohosh, and red clover. Soy isoflavones and red clover (a source of isoflavones) have weak estrogenic effects that may help ease menopausal symptoms due to estrogen losses. Isoflavones may also promote heart and bone health. For best results, eat a diet rich in soy protein in addition to isoflavone supplementation. Black cohosh has been shown to ease menopausal symptoms, in particular hot flashes and night sweats. Although the mechanism of action is unknown, it has been suggested that black cohosh may help regulate body temperature.
For mood disturbances, consider SAM-e supplements. Numerous studies show supplementing with SAM-e is an effective way to enhance mood with virtually no side effects. Bone and heart health are also concerns for women going through menopause. To ensure bone health, calcium supplements with vitamin D are often recommended and may help prevent osteoporosis. Magnesium, vitamin K, and isoflavones may also promote bone health. Consider omega-3 fatty acid supplements such as fish or flaxseed oil, antioxidants such as CoQ10 and vitamin E, and a B-complex to promote overall heart health. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking supplements for menopausal symptoms, especially if you are currently taking a form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). |
